How to Connect your PS3 to the DELL 2407WFP at 1080p
When I got my ps3 I had 2 ways to connect my ps3 to the dell 2407 WFP ….
Solution #1
With only one cable with one end with HDMI connector and on the other end with DVI…..
the problem with this solution is that when ever I get a HD TV I won’t be able to reuse the cable…
Solution #2 (the one I used)
Get a normal HDMI cable with both ends HDMI and use a converter…..
So as soon as I got my playstation 3 I went to RadioShack and got my self 2 things…
So for less than $100 including tax… you can connect your PS3 with your Dell 2407WFP and reuse the cable with another HDTV….

After making the Connection use a normal TV with the cables that came with the System and also connect the HDMI to your dell (connect both at the same time)
then go:
Settings –> Display Settings –> Video Output Settings
then select HDMI at 1080p and then your TV will go black and it will show up on the DELL then press X…..
then go disconnect the normal cable and you are done!
I keep getting emails on where to get the cables & adapters mention in this article to here you go:

How sure are you that this monitor can handle 1080p, because i am really confused about it. I have found some reviews over the internet, that are stating that this monitor, could not handle 1080p and that it downgrades everything into 1080i or 720p. I really want a confirmation about this, because i really want to order it, but i am a little skeptic about this 1080p uncertainty.
Thanks
it work since day one at 1080p… (no updates needed when 1080p was selected via the HDMI connection)
it won’t flash the screen when loading the nba demo…
on setting it always said 1080p ….
I have never got a problem at all with it….
but make sure is the 2407WFP and not the 2405fpw (which don’t work)
keep in mind I use a normal hdmi cable and a converter at the end, and
not a cable that has two different ends which I read that made some
problems in some cases.
Thanks for the information. I don’t currently own a PS3, i own a XBOX 360 and due to this confusion about 1080p capabilities, i wanted to be sure that this monitor can handle it with no problems at all.
Thanks for the info. Umm can you play blu ray movies with this cause i heard you can’t with the converter. thanks
Hi.. thanks for the info.. btw.. i have this monitor too… planning to purchae a ps3 soon. the thing is.. if u use the hdmi converter.. then how about the audio? whats the setup like?.. thanks
YUP, UR RIGHT DUDE ITS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!ALL U NEED 2 DO IS BUY THOSE CABLE AND HOOK IT UP TO UR PS3 AND DELL PC MONITOR. THEN TURN ON UR PS3 (COMPONENT CABLE NEEDS TO BE HOOK UP 2 AND USE THIS INPUT SOURCE TO SET-UP UR DISPLAY SETTING.) NOW GO 2 DISPLAY SETTING ON UR PS3 THEN, SELECT HDMI THEN, PRESS THE INPUT SOURCE SELECT BUTTON ON UR DELL PC MONITOR(2407WFP) ITS THE LAST BUTTON TO UR LEFT. PRESS IT UNTIL U SELECT DVI-D. AND THERE U GO. BOOOOOOOOO YAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AS FAR AS AUDIO, I USED MY MONSTER AV MULTI-OUTPUT. IT HAS THE COMPONENT CABLE (red, blue green) AND AV AUDIO (RED,WHITE) ALL-IN-ONE CABLE. U CAN PURCHASE THIS @ GAMESTOP. I CONNECT THE RED AND WHITE CABLE TO MY ALTEC LANSING PC SPEAKERS. AND IT WORKS.
YOU CANNOT USE A DVI-I ADAPTER LIKE THE Monster® High-Performance Male DVI to Female HDMI® Adapter STATED ABOVE. THIS DELL MONITOR REQUIRES A DVI-D ADAPTER, THE DVI-I ADAPTER HAS 29 PINS.(THE 29TH PIN IS CONSIDERED TO BE THE WIDE FLAT ONE ISOLATED FROM THE NEEDLE PINS) THIS MONITOR CAN ONLY HANDLE 25 PINS, SO OBVIOUSLY THE ADAPTER WON’T EVEN PLUG IN WITH A DVI-I 29 PIN. WHEN YOU ARE GETTING AN ADAPTER GET A DVI-D DUAL LINK 25PIN, PLEASE REFER TO http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVI-I#Connector FOR MORE ON DVI CONNECTOR TYPES.
IF YOU GET THE HDMI TO DVI-D SINGLE LINK(19 PIN) YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PLAY AT 1080p, YOU’LL BE ONLY ABLE TO ACHIEVE 1080i RESOLUTION.
(THE 19TH PIN IS CONSIDERED TO BE THE WIDE FLAT ONE ISOLATED FROM THE OTHER SINGLE NEEDLE PINS)
NOW, YOU DON’T NEED TO BUY TWO SEPARATE PIECES, ALL YOU NEED TO FIND IS A HDMI TO DVI-D DUAL LINK 25PIN CABLE, SUCH AS THE BELKIN PURE AV.
(THE 25TH PIN IS CONSIDERED TO BE THE WIDE FLAT ONE ISOLATED FROM THE OTHER SINGLE NEEDLE PINS)
CARLITO IS RIGHT JUST BUY THE CABLES THAT HE MENTIONED ABOVE AND IT WILL ABSOLUTELY WORK. NO DOUBT ABOUT IT, COZ IT WORKED ON MINE.
YOU ARE USING A SINGLE LINK CONVERTER WHICH MEANS YOU’LL ONLY GET HALF THE BANDWIDTH OF DIGITAL TRANSFER, USE DUAL LINK CABLES LIKE I SAID FOR A BETTER PICTURE OR LISTEN TO THE NOOBS AND GET A WEAKER SIGNAL
THIS GUY DON’T KNOW WHAT HIS TALKING ABOUT COZ, HE DOES’NT HAVE ONE PS3 YET.
Get a normal HDMI cable with both ends HDMI and use a converter…..
Hey , Can anyone help me figure out if the dvi-d output on my Sony pfm42vi will hook up to a PS3 ?? In my Sony manual it says ” DVI : Connects to the digital RGB signal output of a computer ” I NEED to have a PS3 and the only way I can hook it up to my plasma is with the dvi-d . Any ideas ?? jeremysalway@shaw.ca
ALL I CAN SAY JEREMY IF UR SONY IS A PC MONITOR IT WILL NOT WORK. ONLY CERTAIN PC MONITOR IS COMPATIABLE. IT HAS TO BE HDCP COMPLIANT. NEW DELL AND SAMSUNG PC MONITORS WILL WORK AND IF IM NOT MISTAKEN SONICVIEW 22″ WILL ALSO WORK ON UR PS3.
hey Jeremy, I have to second what SEALION just said…
check what kind of dvi you have….. your div MIGHT be digital. there is dvi-a, dvi-d and dvi-i. a is analog and not much different from component.
[...] related to PS3 + dell [...]
First off you don’t need to buy expensive adapters and cables when your talking HDMI and DVI. They are digital signals. In the end the image will either work or not. Those Monster Cables you see in the stores for 100+ are a total rip-off. $5 HDMI cables will do the same exact job as the most expensive HDMI cables you can buy.
DVD-D to HDMI Adapter $13
http://sewelldirect.com/hdmi-to-dvi-male-in-male-out-adapter.asp
6ft HDMI Cable $4
http://www.firefold.com/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=PRICEMELT
Both items will give you the same picture for under $20.
what Dasutin says is true… you don’t brand name cables/connectors…

if some of you still don’t believe that it works with this monitor here is a picture
Hi,
Does the Dell 2407 display the ps3 image in fullscreen ? or in a letterbox ?
hd 1080p is 1920×1080 (16:9 aspect ratio)
Dell screen is 1920×1200 (16:10 aspect ratio)
If you want the full HD experience I’d want an exact pixel for pixel match which would mean displaying in letterbox mode, is this possible with the Dell 2407 ?
Thanks
Mark
He you guys,
I’m from holland and i just bought the dell 2407wfp. Ik got the revision A04 which also does 1:1 pixel mapping.
This means that you will be able to experience full hd without any stretching or something like that.
But I also have a question regarding the connection between the ps3 and the dell. I also have altec lansing speakers, like 2 years old or something. I want to connect them to my ps3 and dell. If i got it right i need some sort of component cable so the audio wil go through the component and the video through dvi-d.
Can anybody help me with this, tell me which cable i need?
thanks in advance and greets from Holland.
Bart
So if you input a 1080P source like the ps3 into the 2407 does it stretch the screen or are you able to select 1:1 or aspect in the menu?
Rev a03 supposedly is stuck to FILL only with the menu greyed out
Rev a04 should allow you to select 1:1, Aspect, or Fill
Is this true?
Anybody know of a DVI splitter that I can get. I don’t want to hook my monitor to to computer via VGA. I would also like to keep that DVI for performance reasons.
hey oz you mean something like this ?

here
or like this?
Hey Carlitos, thanks a lot brother. I just got my Dell 2407FPW two days ago and today I was wondering if I could actually connect my PS3 to it. I followed your directions and all I can say is WOW. The picture quality is stunning. It’s like nothing a have seen before. It’s way better than the HDTV I keep the PS3 connected to (which is only 1080i).
Just a tip for those who want to give it a shot: If the Tv you have the PS3 connected to is 1080p, you are fine. All you have to do is connect the PS3 to the monitor through the DVI to HDMI cable and you are good to go; the image should appear on the screen immediately. The problem comes when the resolution in the PS3 was set to something other than 1080p (because the Tv doesn’t support it). Then you have to RESET THE PS3 TO FACTORY SETTINGS and when you run the initial setup select composite cable (or S-Video for that matter, depending on the tv that you’re going to put next to the monitor to setup the 1080p connection). Do this in the same input you are connected (HDMI?) and have at the same time the composite cable (or S-Video) connected to another input in the same HDTV. When you switch to the composite input you won’t see anything, but that’s Ok. After selecting the new input in the setup menu, turn off the PS3 (yes, in the middle of the initial setup) and disconnect it from the HDTV. Now put the 2nd tv close to the 2407, connect the PS3 to that tv, turn on the PS3 and you should get the initial setup menu in the tv. Before selecting the output resolution connect the PS3 to the 2407 (obviously while keeping the composite connection), now select 1080p, the tv screen turns black, disconnect the tv and that’s it. Enjoy…
That’s it for video. Now, don’t forget that because the input in the monitor is DVI (which transports only video and not audio unlike HDMI), you have to figure out the way to make the audio work depending on your audio setup. Do some research in google and I’m sure you can find someone willing to share something useful.
Hey guys,
It doesn’t necessarily have to be an HDMI to HDMI cable with an adapter at one of the ends. All it needs to be is HDMI in one end and DVI at the other one. It can be just one cable without adapters. And Dasutin is right; it doesn’t have to be expensive. I’m using one that Comcast gave me for free with the DVR because my HDTV doesn’t have HDMI, but DVI. You do wanna make sure though, that the DVI head is the right one (the right number of pins..).
hey Carlos … resetting the PS3 TO FACTORY SETTINGS is kind of crazy man….
what I do is:
connect both at the same time to the PS3 (one via HDMI->DVI to my dell and the other via composite to my regular TV) … before unplugging one or the other…
then I just go to settings and change it …. and bam! it works….
I do the same thing in reverse when I need to change it back….
Yea Carlitos that is exactly what I am looking for. Thanks a lot for the quick reply.
hi u guys out there,
I was hoping if any1 could tel me how i hook up a ps3 to a pc monitor, what cables will i need, what kind of monitor i will need, does the pc monitor hav to be hd ready?
if smeone is kind ebuf can they please email me on ykallisp@yahoo.co.uk
thanks every1
Hate to ask this since I was the one who mentioned it, but how exactly would the dvi-d splitter work there isn’t a switch on it that allows me to switch back and forth. In that case, would the monitor prompt me with some sort of message when I have both the computer and PS3 on? If anybody can shed some light it would be much appreciated.
By the way ps3 works beautifully with the monitor props to Carlitos for the write up.
I just received a Dell 2407 rev03 and want to view HDCP content on Blu-ray at 1080p thru it. I bought it thru the outlet, not new.
I have 10 hours to decide if I want to use the RMA I got to return it for a refund.
Is this possible? Would I need a rev a04 to get true 1:1 pixel mapping?
I think we all just want the same thing… Digital to Digital signals displayed at the year 2007 resolution of 1080p.
thanks
Hey Oz:
did you ever found out a solution for for the DVI splitter thing? I am sort of in the same boat. Here is my setup… xbox360 hooked up to vga… DVI for PC…. Component for PS3 (I got 2407wfp before I found out it doesn’t support 1080p over component and I don’t like the 1080i result so now it is 720p)… I do have a HDMI -> DVI cable and PS3 works great with it @ 1080p…. wanna use both pc and ps3 on the dvi so I’ve to go to the spliiter way. Saw a DVI splitter on ramelectronics… way too expensive..
Just a note to say, I got my PS3 today and also bought a dell 2407 ao4 at the same time, thanks to this blog I knew it would all work and when I connected it all up all I can say is WOW.
The PS3 connected to a Dell 2407 has blown me away, Casion Royale at 1080p is just stunning.
Anyone who doubts the above advice they should not.
It works fine at 1080p with a excellent picture.
Thank u. this article hel me a lot
[...] PS3 works with HDMI-DVI cable 1:1, aspect or fill (Ways to connect to the PS3 here) [...]
So basically I have to unplug the dvi cable that connects to my pc everytime and plug the hdmi/dvi converter from the ps3 everytime i want to play it?
This is probably a stupid question, but if DVI is only video, how do you get sound from the PS3 as well?

and what do you do about the sound?
sound is outputed using either component or digital out
u can maunally select audio output on PS3
Hi all, and Carlitos, both the picture u shown for the split dvi connector, the first one allow one input to two output. My questions:
1. So, will this work if this were to be used to connect both pc and ps3 to one monitor?
2. If this works, how would one switch between ps3 and pc?
3. How to get sound in this case?
Thanks in advance.
@imkas
hi! in response to your questions:
1. yes, since the monitor has multiple inputs (all different thought, notice the blue connector on my picture, that is my PC via VGA)
2. you just click the button in front on the monitor that changes the input.
3. well the sound is treated separate I have a bose system with multiple inputs which i use for my computer and PS3. (you can configure the PS3 to send the audio through a different cable like RCA or digital or even the HDMI cable completely independent on how the video is output it. )
Hey Calitos,
I am refering to the dvi split connector, that is to go to your DVI and then the split go to one pc and one ps3. So my question is, this dvi split connector is for 1 input to 2 output, so this wont work on then, is that right?
i suppose the lcd monitor is the output, and both the pc and ps3 is input, so ….. anyone know of this or have used this, please help. Much appreciated.
Ok, ps3 hooked up on the dell ultrasharp(20″) but no sound… Do i need to buy a digital audio coaxial cable to hook it up from the monitor to the pc tower itself or? I don’t know what to do.
I can see the image with an outstanding resolution but again..I need the sound.
HELP
I assume that the monitor does not have speaker with it.
My understanding is that you’ll need to have a PC speaker and have an adapter to connect the 2 colored cables (Red, White, Yellow) with the PC speaker. I’m thinking of getting 2 female to 1 female adapter as the speaker has a male jack as well.
That is in regards to the Audio.
For the video, just to summarize everything, all you need is a HDMI to DVI cable, am I correct?
And just to make things a bit more complicated, if I’m planning to use the monitor for my PC as well, do I need a switch or something? Cuz it won’t be efficient to plug&unplug cables just to switch between PC and PS3.
I have a problem when I was trying to set this up. What I did was I bought a HDMI to DVI-D cable and plug it onto my Dell monitor (the same one used in this article) and instead of having another TV, I plugged the component cables I have to the monitor as well.
I’ve tried many times to get this work but I’m still not getting any picture, what am I doing wrong?
